Within the framework of funding secured from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD, “Ukraine digital: Ensuring academic success in times of crisis”), the Faculty of Medicine of Julius-Maximilians-University Würzburg is seeking to fill a number of short-term teaching contracts to teach Ukrainian medical students from Ternopil and Vinnitsiya in online courses. The initial period of funding is for four months (starting End of August 2022, funding currently secured until 31.12.2022).
We are specifically seeking qualified doctors with at least three years of clinical experience (e.g. internal medicine, general practice, surgery, gynaecology and obstetrics, psychiatry and paediatrics) who are fluent in Ukrainian, but also speak English and are also registered as resident in Germany with the associated residence permit and right to seek employment (currently issued to Ukrainians as standard). Knowledge of German is clearly advantageous but is not seen as a requirement for these positions. The focus is on providing training in an online teaching environment (using Zoom as our client) to Ukrainian clinical medical students matriculated at our partner institutions in Ukraine.
The payment will be at an hourly rate of 65 Euro per hour. The activity as a contract teacher is viewed as self-employment in the sense of income tax and social security law in Germany. Therefore, the remuneration is not subject to income tax and social security contributions. However, contractors must keep records of the amounts received and declare them in their income tax return).
The teaching activities will focus on two modules:
1: Communication skills training, counselling, and assessment
We will teach basic communication, counselling, and assessment skills to undergraduate students to increase their clinical competence. In the asynchronous phase, we will focus on the importance of communication in medical practice, taking the case and medical history, breaking bad news, and techniques to assess patients with post-traumatic stress disorder. Thereafter, we train standard techniques in role-plays performed by students, practice communications skills with simulated patients and reflect in small-group discussions.
2: Clinical reasoning and case-based training
Clinical reasoning encompasses the application of knowledge to collect and integrate information from various sources to arrive at a diagnosis and management plan for patients in a shared decision-making. We will implement case-based discussions to apply the acquired knowledge. These will encompass the major medical disciplines such as internal medicine, general practice, surgery, gynaecology and obstetrics, psychiatry and paediatrics. Existing teaching materials and/or new patient cases with real findings anonymized will be implemented in patient-based discussion cases carried out in seminars.
The hourly-based teaching contracts are offered as work from home (WFH, “home office”), requiring a stable high-speed internet connection and PC/laptop. Teaching activities will encompass approx. 5 to 15 hours per week and will be arranged in accordance with the NMU curriculum during the daytime. German medical students of Ukrainian origin will be able to assist in scheduling the online meetings and to provide technical support during the initial phase of teaching.
Candidates are required to have a valid residence permit for Germany and be registered with German tax authorities. We also require you to have documented experience in teaching, including experience with distance-learning opportunities using platforms such as Zoom (preferably). We will provide you with an initial working plan to train the digital and didactic skills. Of note, the teaching contracts do not provide successful candidates with the permission to work as medical doctors providing healthcare. They are no replacement to the clinical qualifications or endorsement of a licence to practice gained in a country other than Germany that are required to practice as a doctor in Germany.
