CACM Article about our Interdisciplinary Research Project "ROOT"

27.06.2025 |

CACM has recently published an article about our interdisciplinary research project "ROOT" in a special section on "Sustainability".

We are proud to annouce that CACM has recently published an article about our interdisciplinary research project "ROOT" in a special section on "Sustainability".
The article is available online in the ACM Digital Library and on the CACM website.

Teaser about our article "Continuous Earth Observation of Forest Dynamics and Biodiversity" (CACM)

Up-to-date data on forest dynamics are vital to understand their impact on biodiversity, climate change mitigation, and forest management. This information not only fosters widespread societal awareness of the consequences of global change but also enables decision makers at various levels to make evidence-based choices and take timely actions. The primary challenge lies in the high spatial and temporal variation of all target variables. In this context, remote sensing has emerged as a promising solution, especially for large-scale forest-related scenarios. We implement a distributed satellite data processing workflow to continuously feed a geoinformation portal and mobile application. This way, we can provide timely and targeted information on forest dynamics, local disturbance events, and biodiversity changes for the entire Bavaria region.

The HDPA terrabyte Earth Observation exploitation platform is the core compute infrastructure for the continuous satellite data processing in this project. Thanks to LRZ Supercomputing Center and DLR German Aerospace Center for this great opportunity.

Involved people from our chair are Nikolas Herbst and Samuel Kounev.
