An organ in all organs: how migratory and resident cells network to form “the immune system”

Institute: Institute of Systems Immunology, University of Würzburg, Germany

In addition to “mobile” cells of the immune system that migrate through our body, most anatomical compartments host resident populations of immune cells that act as local sentinels and contribute to homeostasis, repair and function of their “host” tissue. We are investigating how innate and adaptive lymphocytes interact, how they adapt to specific tissue-environments and how they function as part of local and systemic immune cell networks. Our aim is to understand the context-dependent physiological and pathological functions of migratory and resident lymphocytes for tissue homeostasis as well as infectious and inflammatory diseases.
