Sustainability, surely you have heard of this word before? By definition, sustainability or sustainable development means “Meeting the needs of the present in a way that does not limit the opportunities of future generations. It is important to give equal consideration to the three dimensions of sustainability – economically efficient, socially just, and ecologically feasible.” (Source: www.bmz.de). What about sustainability in orthopedic surgery medicine and its experimental research?

The Orthopedic Hospital König-Ludwig-Haus with Director Prof. Maximilian Rudert and the Department of Musculoskeletal Tissue Regeneration with Chair Prof. Denitsa Docheva have been working intensively on the subject since 2023 in a close communication with the JMU Vice-President on “equal opportunity, career planning and sustainability” Prof. Anja Schlömerkemper.

As a first step, Prof. Docheva organized a “Hot Topic: Green Clinic and Lab-Symposium” at the Annual Congress of the German Society of Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgery (DKOU, Deutscher Kongress für Orthopädie und Unfallchirurgie) in Berlin in October 2023 to discuss sustainability approaches at the elite university level, in the operating room and in the research laboratory. As Congress President of the DKOU 2023, Prof. Maximilian Rudert chose sustainability as a hot topic for the first time. The symposium comprised the following outstanding speakers: Prof. Anja Schlömerkemper with the topic of “Promotion of sustainable development at the University of Würzburg”, Dr. Hannah Richter (representative of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research), who talked on “Sustainability in the operating theater”. Last but not least, the international keynote speaker Prof. Una FitzGerald from Biomedical Engineering in the University of Galway, Ireland presented “The rise of lab greening as a climate action” wherein practical tips on what can be improved in the laboratories to increase the sustainability index were provided.

Following the successfully symposium and inspiring exchange with the keynoters, the Department of Musculoskeletal Regeneration will initiate in collaboration with the Vice-president Prof. Anja Schlömerkemper the Green Lab certification process in early 2024, as procedure that will be carried out under the guidelines of the globally recognized non-profit organization under the program “My Green Lab Certification” https://www.mygreenlab.org/green-lab-certification.html and locally coordinated by the sustainability lab WueLAB www.uni-wuerzburg.de/wuelab/. By making the first experience in Würzburg area, not only the Department’s green score will grow, but also there will be an increase of awareness that can motivate more research institutions to step in the initiative, reduce their CO2 footprint and act in a more environmentally friendly manner.
