Bernhard Nieswandt is Professor of Experimental Medicine and Director of the Institute of Experimental Biomedicine, University Hospital and Rudolf Virchow Center, University of Würzburg (since 2008)

He studied in Biology and Biochemistry in Regensburg (DE) and Canterbury (UK) and did his PhD in tumor immunology (Regensburg).

His research focuses on deciphering the function of platelets in normal hemostasis and thrombosis, as well as their interaction with cells of the immune system in different vascular diseases (“thrombo-inflammation”). Another research focus lies on the mechanisms regulating thrombopoiesis under healthy and diseased conditions. Primary goal is to identify novel therapeutic targets for the prophylaxis and treatment of ischemic cardio- and cerebrovascular diseases, as well as inherited and acquired platelet disorders.

He is spokesman of the DFG-funded collaborative research center CRC/TR240 “Platelets” (since 2018), which built on the strong platelet focus of the previous Collaborative Research Center (SFB) 688 „Mechanisms and Imaging of Cardiovascular Cell-Cell Interactions“ (2006 – 2017), which he also led as spokesman. He served as Vice Dean of the Medical Faculty of the University of Würzburg and Co-Chair of the Rudolf Virchow Center at the University of Würzburg, a Center for Integrative and Translational Bioimaging.

He is co-founder of Emfret Analytics, a biotech company specialised on antibodies for vascular research and holds numerous patents in the field of thrombosis, haemostasis and thrombo-inflammation.

He is on national and international scientific advisory boards and section editor of The Journal of Thrombosis & Haemostasis (JTH).
