Anke Smits

Anke Smits is an assistant professor in the Cardiovascular Cell Biology group at the Department of Cell and Chemical Biology, Leiden University Medical Center (LUMC), the Netherlands. Anke obtained her PhD at Utrecht University studying cell-based cardiac repair. After graduating she completed postdoc positions at University College London, Oxford University and at the LUMC. Currently, Anke studies the molecular and cellular contributions to heart development and repair with a special interest in the epicardium. In her group she applies cell culture, preclinical mouse models for cardiac disease, and advanced cardiac imaging techniques to identify novel targets to improve heart function after injury.
