Cell-based tissue models as alternatives to animal testing

Abstract: At the Fraunhofer Translational Center for Regenerative Therapies, we are developing in vitro models
of human barrier organs that represent attractive alternatives to animal testing. They offer the
possibility to specifically test drugs, decorative and protective cosmetics, food as well as dietary
supplements. In addition, pathological conditions such as cancer can also be simulated in such model
systems and infection models enable mechanistic studies of pathogenic virulence and host responses.
