General information about the CRC / TR 240 “Platelets”
Blood platelets play a critical role in preventing excessive bleeding at sites of injury, but trigger also blood clots within the diseased circulation causing heart attack and stroke, two of the leading causes of death and severe disability worldwide. A deepened understanding of the role of platelets in cardio- and cerebrovascular diseases has led to significant improvements in therapy and reduced morbidity and mortality, but often at the expense of bleeding complications.
Recent evidence has indicated unexpected roles of platelets in (patho)physiological conditions, such as thrombo-inflammation, innate immunity and host defence, maintenance of barrier and organ integrity, tissue regeneration, and proliferative diseases. Exploring these emerging platelet functions may lead to novel treatment concepts also beyond cardiovascular disorders.
The CRC / TR 240 project is a highly interdisciplinary approach relying on a combination of state-of-the-art mouse genetics, in vivo disease models, super-resolution microscopy and advanced in vivo imaging techniques, systems biology/omics, translational platforms, and clinical research expertise.
